A TELSTRA plan to build a fuel tank in a residential area has angered Cardiff residents, who say the tank would be a safety hazard.

Lake Macquarie City Council received a 134-signature petition that objected to the tank being built at a Telstra telephone exchange on the corner of Queens Avenue and Brown Street.

Telstra wants to remove an underground 5000-litre diesel fuel tank and replace it with an above-ground 2000-litre tank.

The tank, to be used for back-up power, would be 2.5 metres long, 1.4 metres high and 3.4 metres long.

A fuel vent would be built on the exchange's roof.

Deborah Macdonald, whose property adjoins the exchange, said the tank would pose a safety risk. Councillors are due to vote on the matter tonight.
