Rear Vision, 8.35pm, Radio National: Even fans of Top Gear and Jeremy Clarkson's gas-guzzling monsters must wonder why society's 100-year obsession with the automobile - particularly in the US, where big has always been better - has seldom embraced any restraint. The Bugatti Veyron's tyres will fail after 15 minutes at 400 kmh but it is comforting to know that the car's fuel tank runs dry after only 12. Brilliant. Now, as fuel economy and efficiency become crucial to human survival, a look in the rear-view mirror at a century of over-indulgence. Listeners hearing the program on their car radios may be tempted to coast home.
